"The Arts have always been a part of my life. I was fortunate to grow up in an environment where my artistic endeavors were encouraged. Some of my earliest memories include dancing around the living room while Flight of the Bumblebee and Popcorn played on the record player. My childhood was filled with LiteBrites, Play-Doh, finger paints, puppets, dance lessons, piano, plays, chorus, and construction paper.
My parents understood the importance of the Arts and fortunately, they had the means to make the Arts available to me.
My elementary music and art teachers were stellar- the perfect combination of creative magic and high but realistic expectations, with an evident passion for teaching. (Their passion for teaching became even more evident when I had the opportunity to visit both of these teachers back in 2010, each still working at the elementary school where they taught me more than 30 years prior.)
It is because of these people and the experiences they afforded me that I chose to become an artist-in-residence.
Not every students will love the Arts like I did, but I am a believer that there is an Artist in every one of us and a creative side that needs to be explored. The more exciting and new experiences a child can have, the greater the chance he or she will grow into the person they were meant to become.
It is my hope that when I am invited to your school or center to teach the students you care so much about, I can bring them an exciting and new experience, leaving them with a piece of the creative magic that was gifted to me as a child."
